This unit culminates in a summative assessment during the final lesson where the students create their Public Service Announcements. This assessment will allow me to know that they understand the unit’s essential questions (How does bullying affect people? and How can we make everyone feel safe and cared for?) as well as the guiding questions (What is bullying?, What is racial bullying?, Why are differences important?, How does bullying make those being bullied feel?, Who can help us when we are being bullied?, Why do people bully other people?, How does the bully feel?, Why do we need to help the bully too?, How can we prevent bullying?, and Why should the bully’s point of view be talked about?). While working in small groups, the students will create a PSA that represents the bully’s point of view as well as those being bullied. They will be required to do research to supplement the knowledge they have learned during earlier lessons within this unit. Their PSA should include factual information about bullying as well as ideas about how to stop bullying. The students will be required to turn in a script for their PSA as well as the actual video, which will be watched by the whole class. Both the script and the video will serve as evidence representing their understanding of the essential and guiding questions for the unit. The students will be expected to follow a rubric (displayed below) while planning their PSA so that they can fully demonstrate their understanding of the concepts.
